Welcome!
This web site of Applied Environmental Anthropology Research Group (AEARG) at Northern Kentucky University (NKU). Led by Dr. Douglas Hume (Assistant Professor of Anthropology), this undergraduate research group investigates cultural connections between humans and the environment with special consideration to issues of conservation. The AEARG partners with the Scripps Howard Center for Civic Engagement to provide service learning projects for NKU students.
Anthropological theory and method is uniquely equipped to assist development projects by providing ethnographic data on local human communities and other project stakeholders. Key to our method of data collection is the ethnographic interview in which data are collected and qualitatively analyzed to design survey instruments for further analysis by quantitative methods.
Although we are currently involved with several projects, we always welcome inquiries into future service learning projects with communities and development projects in the Northern Kentucky/Cincinnati region.
